How to Host the Ultimate Garage Sale!

How to Host the Ultimate Garage Sale

Whether you’re getting ready to sell or you just want to purge your garage salehome of unneeded items, here are some useful tips to prepare for and How to Host the Ultimate Garage Sale

  1. Be brutal when deciding what to sell! The rule goes if you haven’t worn it or used it in a year, then its time to let it go. If your storage space is tight, really evaluate why you are holding on to items you don’t use. If you can’t think of a good reason, then its time to sell it.
  1. Decide in advance what to do with the profits! Giving your sale a purpose (i.e. using the money towards a trip, a night out or moving expense), will help put you in the right frame of mind. You’re more apt to bargain with customers and move your items for cold hard cash if you remember why you’re doing this in the first place. ***Special Note…if you tell your kids you’re saving for something like a trip to Disney, they are more likely to decide to let go f their toys***
  1. Don’t throw anything away! Remember, one person’s junk is another’s treasure. So, unless the item is broken or really soiled/moldy, put it out to sell. You never know who might need or what it. IF it doesn’t sell, you can trash it…or better yet, donate items to a well-deserving local charity.
  1. Price items to sell! The value of something is really based on what a person is willing to pay for it. Not what you THINK it is worth. So, start with a price you want to get for an item, but be willing to negotiate. Price high, sell low. Personally, I never put prices on items, but let the customers and I come up with a price together. That way they think they are getting a deal.
  1. Make eye-catching signs! My biggest pet peeve is when I see a yard sale siggarage salen that’s flapping in the wind with words I can’t read. Your best bet is to use foam board or a sturdy cardboard instead of flimsy poster board so that the signs can withstand any weather or wind. And use thick black markers to make sure the information is clearly visible. If you can, hang your signs the night before so you can focus on prepping your sale in the morning.
  1. Don’t forget about social media! There’s a website for everything these days. Make sure to post your garage sale on all the free yard sale search sites (do a google search), Craigslist, local Facebook yard sale groups, etc. This can really up your traffic and reach a much larger group than your signs.
  1. Have fun! Don’t forget to relax and have fun. If you prepare yourself beforehand, your duties day of shouldn’t be anything more than greeting people and counting your profits. Take the time to talk to your guests and share memories of your items if you have them (where you got it, etc) . A pleasant shopping experience always leads to good sales.
