10 Ways to Make Your Home Irresistible at an Open House

So you have an open house scheduled.  Its advertised all over the internet and social media.  Flyers are printed and distributed.  Neighbors have been called.  You asked your friends and family to tell everyone.  In preparation for the big event, here are 10 ways to make your home irresistible at an open house.

 

Put fresh or silk flowers in main rooms to a nice touch of color.  No need to spend a fortune on flowers.  A simple daisy in a single vase in the bathroom can be a great addition to brighten up an otherwise dull room
 

 
Add a new shower curtain, fresh towels, and new guest soaps to every bath.  Use a nice mellow scent like
fresh linen or cotton to create a relaxing environment
 
 

 
Set out potpourri or fresh baked goods for a homey smell.  Nothing makes you feel comfortable more than moms homemade apple pie or chocolate chip cookies.  Be careful not to burn anything because that burnt smell will linger for the entire open house
 

 
Set the table with some pretty dishware or your favorite china setting and be sure to add some coordinating candles
 
 

 
Buy a new doormat with a clever or cute saying.  First impressions matter here and how inviting is it when you walk up to a door that has a mat that says “Welcome To Our Home” or “Home is Where The Heart Is”
 

 
 
Take one or two large pieces of furniture out of the main rooms to create a spacious feel.  You don’t want to have that over sized living room set crammed into a small room.  You want to create a nice flow and room to move around
 

 
Put away all the kitchen appliances and personal bathroom items to free up counter space.  We don’t want to clutter the counters because it will give the sense that there is no counter space to prep on
 

 
If you have a working fireplace, start a small fire for ambiance.  If you don’t have a working fireplace or don’t generally use it, place a nice candle display or a basket of flowers to draw your attention to it

 
 
Depersonalize the rooms by making sure that your family photos, mementos, and distinctive artwork are not displayed.  We are not showing your memories and family, we are showing your house.  No need for things that could distract potential buyers
 

 
If you have a sprinkler system for your yard, turn the system on for about 30 minutes to give the lawn a nice sparkle when the sun hits it.  If you don’t have a sprinkler, you can always hit it with the hose to achieve the same effect
