Whats going on in Worcester County during the Holiday season

As New England’s second largest city, Worcester is well known for its hospitals, its colleges, and its hills (seven to be exact). And just like any city, it’s bursting with places to eat, shop and take in some entertainment.
During the holiday season, Worcester offers even more opportunities to take in a great local performance or simply take part in some great annual events.
Here’s a list of some popular options to catch some local culture in and around town this holiday:

Festival of Lights at the Worcester Common Oval – The City’s annual Festival of Lights will take place on Friday, December 4th from 6 to 8 p.m. on the Worcester Common, behind City Hall. This year’s event will feature a visit from Santa Claus, children’s choral performances, a holiday tree lighting, concessions, free hot cocoa, horse-drawn wagon rides and public ice skating. Worcester Art Museum – Holidays at WAM run through the entire month of December and includes performances in the Renaissance court as well as special programming for children and families. Check www.worcesterart.org for more information.

Rutland Historical Society Festival of Trees – Now in its 14th year, the annual tree lighting in the center of Rutland bring over 1,000 people to this event taking place this year on December 5th & 6th. Local organizations and businesses sponsor and decorate trees on display at the public library – including The Pro’s Real Estate Team – and the family friendly activities include visits from Santa, magic shows, and more. Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra Holiday Pops Concert at Mechanics Hall – Saturday, December 12th. Also a yearly tradition, this concert features local singers and local college choirs alongside the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra in a concert filled with traditional holiday favorites. The Nutcracker – For a traditionalist, one cannot go wrong with seeing the holiday favorite the 
Nutcracker performed. Though many local productions are available, for the date of this blog we recommend the Dance Prism’s production at Mechanics Hall, which will take place December 13th. Tickets can be purchased through Mechanics Hall. Visit www.mechanicshall.org
Christmas by Candlelight at Old Sturbridge Village – This event runs on weekend evenings during December and includes a festive dinner, carolers, sing-a-longs, visits from Santa, sleigh rides and more. For more information visit www.osv.org
A Christmas Carol at the Hanover Theatre – A yearly tradition, this Charles Dickens classic comes back to the Hanover again. Each production is different but also includes local talent from the Worcester community. Dates run from December 18th through the 27th, with a special Autism friendly performance on December 22nd.
